Why do we do now?
No time to lose for an alternative and sustainable global sailing network.
Almost without emission of C02, with an optimal utilization of wind energy, and unity with respect to the elements, employment, team building and taking great
satisfaction in addition to the crew, our trainees and last but not least, our guests.
Why a square rigged ship?
Each square-rigged replica brings many crowds to sail ins and sail outs in every port and maritime event. They are relatively small ships with an extraordinary
charisma and audience favorites. They are impressive and create a special feeling among visitors. For the lucky ones who may sail it’s a live changing experience.
Why a historic replica with modern needs?
To save a whole oak forest the first worldwide sailing 17th century reproduction, the FRIESLAND, builded in steel on an existing seagoing casco.
This reproduction are not limited to merely being displayed in a museum environment and it don't costs a lot of money to keep this ship floating.
People don't have to travel to see this vessel. Instead the ship sail to the people and thereby it can be used for travelers, trainees and promotion for an alternative and
sustainable global sailing network.
Why we will use modern materials?
If a vessel will be sailed, especially if it carries passengers for hire and in combination with trainees, some changes must be made for safety purposes and to satisfy
the regulatory authorities. These may include the addition of an auxiliary engine, the use of wire rigging and the modification of the historical form to gain a sufficient
range of stability.
What we want to achieve?
Sailing with sailing vessels for the ecological restoration by commercial sailing in the future, promote sailing as a platform for our contemporary maritime, nautical
and technical knowledge with a big nod to the rich history of Holland and the 17th century VOC.
Where we do it?
Again Harlingen, Friesland, The Netherlands
What is the result?
FRIESLAND balances the modern needs of a contemporary vessel with its historical impressive appearance, safe, reliable and fully equipped.
What is the Shipowners Society ZVN S.A.?
History
The Shipowners society ZVN SA is based on a funding model from the 17th century, invented by the VOC, a society with the issue of financial "share" equity in
a very closed circle of large and small investors. The investments were made on long-term. Benefit was not immediately after the launch of the ship, but after the
first successful journey back to Holland and trade with their imported merchandise. The first small return on investment was estimated to be paid after three years.
Later, after more successful trips, were brought real profits during 20 years, the normal life of a wooden ship in the 17th century.
The project of the TS Friesland and the ZVN S.A. ~ 2011-2014 (2034)
The ZVN SA is being established at the initiative of VHZC foundation and is named after (the Seven Dutch States) that later during the 17th century would result
into the first "United" Netherlands. TS Friesland is the first ship named as the present province of Friesland, where it will be built and launched in the spring
of 2014 and where it also was built, first in1663.
The investments will be done again in long terms. Profits are made after launch and the first successful tours in 2014. Later, after more successful trips were real
profits brought over 20-30 years, the current life of this ship.
